The global research landscape is changing rapidly. China continues to be the world’s largest producer of scholarly research while strengthening domestic journals through new funding models, research assessment reforms, and national publishing initiatives. India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing research economies, while research investment continues to expand across different global communities including Japan, Korea, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa. At the same time, Europe and North America face changing funding priorities, evolving open research policies, increasing research integrity expectations, and growing adoption of AI throughout scholarly publishing.

Against this backdrop, publishers are asking an increasingly important strategic question: Are our author pipelines resilient enough for the next decade?

Understanding where submissions originate, how author behaviour is evolving, and where future research growth will occur has become essential for building sustainable publishing programmes. As policies, funding priorities, and national research strategies evolve, publishers have an opportunity to diversify submission sources, strengthen global author engagement, and reduce dependence on any single market while continuing to attract the highest-quality research.

This session will examine how policy changes can reshape global submission patterns and why every publisher should have a “Plan B” for geographic author diversification. Drawing on industry data, publisher surveys, and practical experience, speakers will explore strategies for identifying emerging research markets, building trusted regional partnerships, maintaining research integrity, and leveraging AI to support high-quality editorial workflows.
