Over the last decade, in response to a changing, better-informed world, the publishing industry has taken steps to bring more diversity into the workforce as well as to make its content more inclusive. However, those changes have at times been criticized for moving too slowly.

Recent legislation, social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, and global disability rights and transgender equality campaigns have helped accelerate the industry’s desire for equity and better representation for all. As many publishers have seen, though the need and desire to make content and companies more inclusive are there, the path forward on how to implement these changes is not always clear.

Though we all may have heard the acronym DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), adding the “C” for “content” may be new to some publishers. CDEI (Content Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) broadly indicates a focus on making content more relevant, representative of, and responsive to the society and times in which we live.

Today, CDEI is now an integral part of the editorial process for many publishers and, for those who have not done the work to include CDEI measures, there is the potential for disaster—backlash from teachers/students, lack of course adoption, negative media–if they do not begin.

To help publishers, KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd. has published a new report entitled, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Educational Content: What You Need to Know Now, which provides publishers with a starting point and ongoing solutions for one of the largest challenges they must overcome in the push for inclusivity—how to make their future (and previously published) content more representative of the audience engaging with it.

Featuring helpful recommendations and interviews with fellow publishers and experts in the field, this report illustrates how to jumpstart the CDEI process through examples of how others have implemented these changes, how to ensure CDEI standards and mission are able to evolve with changes in the marketplace, and how to make backlist titles more reflective of today’s expectations.

Whether content providers are just starting to make these changes in their workplaces and publications, or are looking for support while on the journey, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Educational Content has something valuable for every publisher.
