Editors Without Borders: Breaking Silos in a Technological World

We’re excited to be attending the ISMTE 2025 Annual Conference, taking place August 5–8 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Hosted by the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), this premier event brings together editorial professionals from across the academic, scientific, and professional publishing communities.

We’re also proud sponsors of the ISMTE Workshop: Editorial Intelligence: Harnessing AI and LLMs for Smarter Workflows—a timely and practical session exploring how emerging technologies can empower editorial teams and enhance operational efficiency.

In March of this year, KGL acquired Origin Editorial. This strategic acquisition combines the organizations’ complementary expertise, technology, and workforce to offer enhanced editorial, peer review, and consulting services and meet the rapidly evolving needs of the professional publishing community.

Breakout: Emerging Trends in Peer Review Technology: Techniques for Discovery and Migration

Wednesday, August 6, 2:30 – 3:15 PM

Session Speakers

David Allen, Editorial Director and Publishing Consultant, KGL

Meghan McDevitt, Managing Editor, KGL

Editorial management systems (EMS) provide daily operational infrastructure that directly impact the success of the peer review process. EMS technology is rapidly evolving; during this transformative period, it is critical to regularly evaluate your processes, procedures, and technology to address current challenges while anticipating future trends to ensure an efficient and sustainable peer review program. Many publications get “stuck” with the concept that “we have always done it this way.” This can make it more difficult to innovate and respond to changing conditions. The system you currently use, and the workflows tailored to it, may not be the best to support your future needs. Publications should review and evaluate their workflows and the technology used for peer review operations every 5-7 years to remain relevant and ensure that your publication is meeting industry best practices. Auditing your publication’s processes and procedures along with evaluating the technology platforms currently used offers several benefits including increasing staff efficiency; improving the author, reviewer, and editor experience; ensuring that your company is getting a cost-effective technology solution; and improving market competitiveness. In this session, attendees will learn about new technology that is disrupting and changing peer review; discover why journals should be evaluating their technology now; and learn about best practices for vendors proposals, workflow evaluations, and migrating to new systems.
