Session 8a: Portfolio Development in the Age of Volume-based Business Models: Mission-aligned Strategies to Drive Revenue and Impact
Thursday, 11 September 2025, 14:50-15:35 BST
Effective portfolio development has become essential for publishers aiming to maintain (and even improve) the publication of quality content, drive impact, enhance author satisfaction, and optimize journal revenues. This session will bring together voices from across the industry to explore innovative approaches for refining (and, where strategically sound, expanding) journal portfolios, optimizing the portfolio’s aims and scope, implementing revenue driving tactics, aligning transfer options with author needs, and ensuring that impact metrics support and advance the society’s overall mission and objectives.
Geared to smaller publishers and societies, the session will feature practical applications and actionable insights. Attendees will learn how to create seamless pathways for authors by strategically aligning scopes and optimizing impact metrics (beyond Impact Factor!) across a suite of journals. We will also explore how editorial board structures and responsibilities are adapting, with the goal of attracting more high-impact submissions and supporting long-term growth objectives. Real world case studies from a range of speakers will feature stories of success and failure to support professional development and guide strategic decision-making.
The session will include diverse perspectives including publications strategists from societies and small publishers; librarians; and allied industry organizations. In addition to offering practical tips, our speakers will reflect on the broader effects of a “growth” mindset and its challenges for the industry and science.
This unique opportunity is tailored for professionals ready to transform their publications to increase engagement and impact. Attendees can expect a mix of strategic insight and practical advice for maintaining your competitive edge, driving growth, and meeting the evolving needs of the author and research community.
