Why Smart Review™?
After two decades supporting peer review for leading publishers and societies, KGL built Smart Review to solve two core problems: rising threats to research integrity and increasing pressure on editorial resources. The result is a tool that automates tedious checks, integrates third-party tools, and centralizes editorial tasks—all within a single interface.
A Unified Interface for Submission Checks
Smart Review replaces multi-tab workflows with a simplified, all-in-one workspace. Editors can now:
- View submission checklists and manuscripts side-by-side
- Track progress in real time
- Auto-generate author communications
- Easily identify discrepancies in metadata and files
Every step is standardized, ensuring nothing gets missed while reducing time spent on routine tasks.
Built-In Automations
Smart Review automates common editorial checks, including:
- Author list and affiliation validation
- Metadata-to-manuscript comparisons
- Figure/table formatting and citation consistency
- Conflict of interest and disclosure statement extraction
- Anonymization and reference verification
Discrepancies are visually highlighted, enabling faster, more accurate editorial decisions.
Research Integrity Integrations and Analytics
Smart Review is designed to scale with the evolving needs of scholarly publishing. Through open API integration, it connects with best-in-class tools like:
DataSeer.ai
Dr. Tim Vines demonstrated how DataSeer automates checks for open data compliance. By evaluating data availability statements and comparing them to journal policy requirements, DataSeer flags missing datasets and suggests clear editorial actions—cutting review time and improving accuracy.
Clear Skies: Papermill Alarm
Adam Day introduced Papermill Alarm, which assesses submissions for signs of fraudulent content. Articles are triaged using risk ratings (green, orange, red), and flagged submissions are accompanied by oversight dashboards showing suspicious patterns, references, or author histories. Editors are empowered to act early—before problematic manuscripts proceed to review.
PeerDash
The Smart Review interface also features PeerDash, a dashboard that consolidates journal performance metrics across a portfolio. Editors and publishers get a high-level view of submissions, reviewer engagement, and workflow bottlenecks—all in one place.
Real Results: Time Saved, Quality Improved
Deployed across multiple journals, Smart Review has delivered:
- Up to 20% reduction in time spent on submission checks
- Improved accuracy and checklist compliance
- Centralized access to all tools and metadata
- A flexible foundation for integrating new research integrity technologies
Whether journals use one checklist or multiple tailored workflows, Smart Review can adapt and evolve—supporting editorial staff while protecting the quality and integrity of scholarly publishing.
