Successful editor-in-chief (EIC) transitions are central to achieving your journal’s editorial development goals. But recruiting and onboarding new EICs involves a range of practical, ethical, and political factors and pitfalls to consider. Some EIC attributes, skills, and qualifications are more important than others. In addition, there is a growing recognition of the importance of fostering DEI among the candidates and those who will evaluate them. How will you identify, recruit, and hire the best candidate to represent the journal in these times of rapid changes in scholarly publishing?

This panel of professionals who recently completed EIC searches will present case studies highlighting the most important aspects of a successful search. They will discuss the groundwork they laid before embarking on the search, such as creating an effective search committee, developing a comprehensive job description, and drafting a solid timeline. Panelists will share details on the importance of the candidate identification and nomination process including development of an editor characteristics list, the call for nominations, as well as purposeful networking and search talking points. And, lastly, they will share insights on how to successfully select final candidates and conduct meaningful interviews. There will also be time for audience questions.
