Wiley: Journal Management for a Global Publishing Leader

Keywords: journals, production, copyediting, composition, XML

Wiley is a global provider of knowledge and knowledge-enabled services that improve outcomes in the areas of research, professional practice, and education. More than 200 years ago a young printer named Charles Wiley printed texts for other publishers. Breaking new ground in publishing, the young company published some of the greatest names in American and European literature, including Hans Christian Andersen, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charles Dickens, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Victor Hugo, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. Constantly transforming and extending its business, the company shifted away from literature toward nonfiction publishing. Wiley is now the definitive source on quality content in the STM (scientific, technical, medical) publishing industry. Wiley publishes digital and print books and journals, online assessment and training services, test prep and certification, and course management tools for instructors and students.

As an internationally-recognized publishing company, Wiley maintains high standards for publishing quality scientific and academic content. Partnering with Cenveo Publisher Services affords us the competitive edge required for today’s publishing environment. Many editorial tasks are improved through technology and automation while the production process is expedited, affording us a faster path to content distribution.
— Paul Lansdowne Director Strategic Sourcing and Procurement Wiley

The expansion of Wiley’s journal publishing program combined with the new speed required to distribute scientific content, led the organization to partner with Cenveo Publisher Services to manage journal production. Wiley recognized that a successful partnership would reduce costs and improve quality and efficiency by centralizing and standardizing production workflows.

To achieve aggressive growth targets with current staff levels, Wiley partnered with Cenveo Publisher Services to edit, manage, and compose 254 titles (with a high volume of annual pages) from its humanities, physical science, life science, medical science, and social science product lines. Managing complex workflows and editorial requirements, Cenveo provides Wiley with flexible journal management based on the needs of its titles.

While editorial and production staff are a key component of journal management, Cenveo’s Publisher Suite, a cloud-based technology ecosystem, also supports Wiley’s content development, content transformations, and content delivery. The individual tools -- Smart Edit, Smart Compose, and Smart Proof, ensure editorial consistency and accuracy while also maintaining XML structure. All of which reduce turnaround times and provide Wiley with properly formatted content from manuscript to composed article in as little as 2 days, depending on content requirements.

Wiley and Cenveo Publisher Services optimized a process-driven and custom journal management solution. Experienced staff act on behalf of Wiley in just the way Wiley would expect its own staff to operate. Every day Cenveo’s journal production staff problem-solve and communicate effectively with Wiley’s authors, which results in a confident outsourced and trusted environment,  enabling Wiley to focus on new title acquisitions and development.
