Trade publishers are having a good year. Revenue from ebook sales surged 5.1% to $404.8 million in the first quarter of 2014 thanks in particular to the dramatically successful John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and Veronica Roth’s Divergent. These two books dominated the entire first quarter’s No. 1 ebook best-seller rankings. The Fault in Our Stars has been No. 1 on the ebook best-seller list for 10 straight weeks.
According to the latest figures from the Association of American Publishers, revenues from print books spiked even more dramatically: 9.8% for hardcovers and 5.3% for paperbacks. Together, these two books helped combined print and ebook revenues jump 31.5% altogether. Wow!
Personally, I am heartened to hear that school-aged kids are so engaged with reading. Professionally, it's good to know that both print and ebook revenues are on the upswing.
